  • One thing the reptiles could do: Put out a bunch of paper cups or similar and hide a treat under one while the reptile can't see. There are wooden and plastic dog toys that the reptiles could also easily pick up--flipping up little doors and such to find rewards. Much of the behavior of reptiles is instinctual rather than "intelligence." The cognitive abilities of a species are better evaluated by watching the behavior of the animal in novel situations rather than watching them do what they are superbly adapted to doing--find and kill prey. They are nothing like rats, which are social animals like humans capable of altruism, reading emotions of other rats, and they are so adaptable that you can teach them a ton of behaviors through clicker training. You could have people guess the weight of your giant snakes. Now, this is not meant to be negative or condescending, but what you guys are doing is not clicker training. The methods are the same no matter what species you are training. It would be good if anyone involved in training read up on the neurobiology of behavior and learning, classic conditioning, and instrumental learning. The clicker is about being able to signal to the animal RIGHT AWAY when the desired behavior is exhibited (or any behavior when just starting) and the REWARD comes a beat or two after so the animal associates the click with a reward to follow. Of course any behaviors should be those that the animal is naturally capable of, but perhaps rarely exhibits in the presence of people. You could teach a snake to rise up vertically from the floor, for example, or to go over the arms of a line of people who are holding their arms out in front of them and then snake moving from one end to the other. Climbing a ladder would be great--just like your anaconda did not long back. A taller ladder or make a better structure from wood or metal or plastic with rounded edges. Finally, the training has to be very consistent--only one person should be involved in each reptile's training. Climbing up to get a piece of meat is okay, but leave commands and clicker to the trainer. At least until you both understand how reptiles learn and how animals learn in general. You must not reward the same each time too. A lot of training is about the animal PREDICTING that it will get a reward--but to retain its interest, have ZERO rewards occasionally and a super reward another random time. The regular rewards should be very small and tasty to keep the animal interested. Anyway, animal behavior and training is a complicated subject now that we know so much about the brain and how we learn. I suggest this set of books: Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training. Volume One is "Adaptation and Learning"--that one is the most relevant. Of course dogs and reptiles are different, but the same theories apply. Search "clicker training basics" on UZworld, sessions with green puppies equivalent to a monitor. Sorry so long! I have long been interested in animal cognition! I am 59 and love your show. I have loved reptiles since I was able to toddle around (apparently taking after my dad). Sadly I live in the maritime climate of the Pacific NW where reptiles are in very short supply. This channel is good for showing the basic training of all kinds of species and trying to think of behaviors they can do. uzworld.info/tost/1Nj4gkoi_n5eCcrKCVOXKA

  • Hi, I don't know whether I'd call it trained if you have to lure them to do everything. Is it possible to actually fade the lure and then after you achieve the behaviour, then you reward, otherwise they are just following food.

  • Hey Brian I heard on your podcast today that you want help playing Didgeridoo, and I also play the didgeridoo, and for me best way to start out is finding out where on your mouth makes more didgeridoo ish sound. Then you try practice for awhile in that spot and soon will make the sound of a didgeridoo. I’m still working on circler breathing it’s actually really hard but sounds easy. Once you’ve got the sound of didgeridoo down your gonna want to try and still be vibrating your lips without breathing out as much, and then try breathing in through your nose while still vibrating your lips

  • I think it would be cool to have a long water tank that the reptiles can swim from one side to the other. I think it is fascinating how they swim. You could time how long it takes for different reptiles to get to the other side and have a "swimming contest" for guests to view. (of course, only do the reptiles that enjoy swimming) It would also be something new for training by encouraging them to get in and out of the tank using ramps on each side.
